Metal Coatings and Paint Finishes

Contractors, specifiers, and homeowners need to consider many factors when choosing the metal finish that is right for them, including project specific considerations, warranty period, and cost.  Metal Panel Systems offers a variety of metal finishes and our staff is happy to assist our customers make the appropriate selection.

Metals that are used in roofing and wall panel applications must have some form of protective coating on the base metal to eliminate, prevent, or minimize corrosion.  Coatings and finishes protect the metal by adding layers of other naturally weathering metals and paint finishes.   Five common finishes offered by Metal Panel Systems include:

  1. Galvanized
  2. Galvalume
  3. Polyester
  4. Silicone
  5. KYNAR 500®/HYLAR 5000®

Galvanized

Steel would quickly corrode if it didn’t have a protective coating.  The galvanization process involves dipping steel into a bath of liquid zinc and allowing it to cool.  The thin zinc coating protects the steel against oxidation and deterioration caused by rust.  G90 Galvanized steel is a common product and has a coating thickness of 90 mils of zinc.

Galvalume®

Galvalume® forms a better protective coating than the one found on galvanized steel. The Galvalume® coating consists of 55% Aluminum, 43.5% Zinc and 1.5% Silicon.  It incorporates the dual protection of galvanized coatings with the barrier protection of aluminized coatings.  Galvalume® is resistant to corrosion and damage caused by heat and is also highly reflectivity.  Galvalume® performs well in temperatures up to 600°F.

Galvalume® coating includes a warranty against perforation for up to 25 years and 6 months on AZ55 coated material.

Polyester

Polyester paint finishes offer a cost efficient alternative to high-end paint systems.  This product is typically used for light gauge trim and flashing products.  Polyester coatings perform well in areas that are protected from direct sunlight and moisture, such as soffits.

Silicon (SMP)

Ultra-Clad Silicone Modified Polyester finishes are commonly referred to as Ultra-Clad SMP paint finishes.  They offer a high quality yet have a lower cost than HYLAR 5000® or KYNAR 500® paint finishes.  SMP has excellent weathering characteristics, performs well in direct sunlight, and includes a standard 30-year finish warranty.  SMP paint finishes are currently stocked in all of the KYNAR 500®/HYLAR 5000® colors and is available in custom colors as well.  All standard Ultra-Clad SMP color formulations utilize Cool technology pigments are Cool rated.
