ANSI/SPRI ES-1

ANSI/SPRI ES-1 is a standard relating to wind loads and wind uplift pressure to the edge metal on a roofing system.  The standard originated from a collaborative effort between the American National Standards Institute and the Single Ply Roofing Industry.  ES stands for edge securement.

This standard applies to roofing systems that are considered low slope which is defined as a roof pitch less than 2/12.  The standard was created for perimeter edge metal since wind uplift pressure is the greatest at the roof edges and corners.  Perimeter edge metal securement is the key to building safety during intense storms.

The perimeter metal fabricated by Metal Panel Systems is compliant with the ANSI/SPRI ES-1 standard.  This means that the edge metal installed on your project, including fascia wrap, gravel stop, drip edge, and coping will be code compliant.  Design loads have been calculated on all fabricated edge metals at Metal Panel Systems to ensure that the roof membrane or parapet walls are properly secured.

An important design criteria for ANSI/SPRI ES-1 systems that are fabricated by Metal Panel Systems include the cleats and fasteners and their placement.  Be sure to review the installation instructions to ensure your edge metal system will remain secured when faced with significant wind uplift pressures.

Why do I need to comply with ANSI/SPRI ES-1?

ANSI/SPRI ES-1 is a requirement in the International Building Code:

1504.5 Edge securement for low-slope roofs. Low-slope built-up, modified bitumen and single-ply roof system metal edge securement, except gutters, shall be designed and installed for wind loads in accordance with Chapter 16 and be tested for resistance in accordance with Test Methods RE-1, RE-2 and RE-3 of ANSI/SPRI ES-1, except Vult wind speed shall be determined from Figure 1609A, 1609B, or 1609C as applicable.

If a roof system fails during high winds, it is likely due to improper edge metal securement.  Contractors and roof system designers such as architects and consultants can be held liable if building codes are not followed.  Rest assured that Metal Panel Systems copings and edge metal packages are tested and comply with ANSI/SPRI ES-1.
